The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, starting near the Kenyan border. It is one of the quieter routes on the mountain as most climbers use the southern routes, so Rongai sees considerably less traffic. The northern approach tends to be drier than the southern routes, particularly during the long rains in April and May, making Rongai a reliable option when other routes are wetter. The route ascends steadily through moorland and alpine desert before joining the main crater rim area for the summit push, then descends via the Marangu Route. We operate both 6 and 7-day Rongai climbs; the 7-day version includes an additional acclimatisation day.
North-side traverse on quieter, drier trails. Suitable for experienced climbers with prior high-altitude trekking. Descends via the Marangu Route.
Starting from $1,800 USD
Extra night at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) — one of the most scenic high camps on the mountain. Improved acclimatisation and our recommended Rongai option.
