Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

Route Comparison

Choosing the right Kilimanjaro route

There is no single best route - the right one depends on how many days you have, what level of acclimatisation you want to build in, whether you prefer camping or hut accommodation, and how much you want to pay. All five routes reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The table below summarises the key differences.

Route Duration Approach Accommodation Character
Machame 6-7 days South Tented camps Most popular; scenic traverse; Barranco Wall scramble
Marangu 5-6 days South-east Permanent huts Only hut route; gentler gradient; same path up and down
Lemosho 7-8 days West Tented camps Quiet start; excellent acclimatisation; joins Machame high route
Rongai 6-7 days North Tented camps Quiet; drier; different landscape from southern routes
Northern Circuit 9 days West, circling north Tented camps Longest; highest success rates; sees most of the mountain
