The 7-day Rongai Route adds one acclimatisation night to the 6-day itinerary, spending an extra day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) before the push to School Hut and the summit. Mawenzi Tarn sits in a dramatic cirque below the jagged Mawenzi peak and is one of the most scenically distinctive high camps on Kilimanjaro. The extra acclimatisation night at this altitude meaningfully improves summit success rates. The route descends via the Marangu Route as with the 6-day option.

Drive from Moshi to the Rongai Gate. Ascend through northern forest — drier and more open than the southern approaches. First Cave Camp (2,650 m) for dinner and overnight.
Continue north-side ascent through open moorland with sweeping views of Kenya. Second Cave Camp (3,449 m) for dinner and overnight.
A shorter lower-gain day for acclimatisation. Kikelelwa Cave Camp (3,600 m) for dinner and overnight. Rest well — altitude increases more steeply from here.
Ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) — a beautiful high-altitude tarn (mountain lake) set in a rocky cirque below the spires of Mawenzi peak. The campsite is one of the most dramatic on the mountain. An afternoon acclimatisation walk to a slightly higher elevation strengthens the adaptation.
The defining extra day of the 7-day Rongai. Spend the morning on a guided acclimatisation walk above the camp — up to around 4,600 m if conditions allow — before returning to rest at the tarn. The Mawenzi Tarn location is exceptionally scenic and the extra time here is one of the highlights of this itinerary. Pulse oximeter checks continue. Rest, hydrate, eat well.
Move to School Hut (4,750 m), the Rongai Route's high camp on the northern shoulder of Kibo. Arrive by early afternoon. Full meal, maximum hydration, rest. Summit briefing from your guide. Midnight wakeup for the summit push.
Midnight departure from School Hut. Ascend to Gilman's Point (5,752 m) on the crater rim, then to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After summit, descend via the Marangu Route — through Horombo Huts for hot drinks, then all the way to Marangu Gate. Certificates issued at the gate. Drive back to Moshi.
