The east coast beaches, particularly around Paje, are internationally recognised for kite surfing due to the reliable south-east trade winds from June to October. Diving and snorkelling are possible from multiple points around the island, with the best sites around Mnemba Atoll in the north. Zanzibar has several well-established dive centres, with the best sites around Mnemba Atoll - a protected marine area in the north-east with consistently good visibility and rich reef life including sea turtles, lionfish, moray eels, and schools of reef fish. Snorkelling trips to shallower sites around the island are available for non-divers.
The east coast of Zanzibar, particularly Paje beach, is one of the best kite surfing destinations in Africa. The south-east trade winds blow reliably from June to October, creating ideal flat-water conditions in the lagoon at low tide. Several kite schools on the east coast offer lessons for beginners and equipment hire for experienced riders.
A traditional wooden dhow sailing at sunset is one of the most relaxed ways to experience Zanzibar's waters. Sunset dhow cruises typically depart from Stone Town or the north coast beaches, last 2 to 3 hours, and include light snacks and drinks. Longer day cruises to Nakupenda sand bank or Prison Island with snorkelling are also available.
