Marangu Route hut camp on Kilimanjaro
Marangu Route

5-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb

  • 5 days / 4 nights on mountain
  • Max altitude: 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak)
  • Moshi, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
  • Difficulty: Challenging
Overview:

The 5-day Marangu Route is the shortest Kilimanjaro itinerary that includes a summit attempt. It uses the mountain's only permanent hut accommodation — Mandara (2,720 m), Horombo (3,720 m), and Kibo (4,703 m) — and follows the same path for ascent and descent on the south-east approach. The compressed timeline means limited acclimatisation time, which makes this the most demanding option of the two Marangu packages in terms of altitude gain per day. We offer the 5-day option for travellers with tight schedules, but we recommend the 6-day to most climbers, particularly those without prior high-altitude experience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary — 5-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb

01

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts

    Altitude: 1,860 m → 2,720 m Distance: 8 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Depart Moshi by road to the Marangu Gate (1,860 m) for registration and pre-climb briefing. Enter the rainforest and begin the ascent through dense montane vegetation. The trail is wide and well-maintained. Colobus monkeys are often seen in the forest canopy. Arrive at Mandara Huts (2,720 m) for dinner and overnight in wooden A-frame huts.

02

Day 2: Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

    Altitude: 2,720 m → 3,720 m Distance: 12 km Hiking time: 5–7 hours

Leave the forest zone and enter the open heath and moorland. The trail climbs steadily with increasingly open views of the surrounding plains and, on clear days, the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks above. Pass through the heather zone with giant groundsels appearing at higher elevation. Arrive at Horombo Huts (3,720 m) for dinner and overnight. The extra elevation gain today is significant — drink plenty of water and eat well.

03

Day 3: Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

    Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,703 m Distance: 15 km Hiking time: 5–7 hours

The landscape transitions to the alpine desert zone — sparse vegetation, loose volcanic rock, and increasingly thin air. The trail passes the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, a high plateau at around 4,300 m. Kibo Huts (4,703 m) sit at the base of the final volcanic cone. Dinner is served early and rest is strongly encouraged. The summit attempt begins at midnight.

04

Day 4: Kibo Huts — Summit — Horombo Huts

    Altitude: 4,703 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m Distance: 21 km Hiking time: 12–16 hours total

Depart Kibo Huts at midnight (approximately) for the summit push in cold, dark conditions. The trail ascends steeply through volcanic scree and loose ash. Gilman's Point on the crater rim is reached after approximately 5–7 hours. From Gilman's Point, follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — approximately 1 additional hour. After summit photographs and a brief pause, begin descent back to Kibo Huts for a rest and hot drink, then continue descending to Horombo Huts for overnight.

05

Day 5: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate

    Altitude: 3,720 m → 1,860 m Distance: 20 km Hiking time: 5–7 hours

A long descent back through heath and rainforest to the Marangu Gate. Certificates are issued at the gate: summit certificate for those who reached Uhuru Peak, achievement certificate for those who reached Gilman's Point. Transfer back to Moshi for your post-climb meal and rest.
