8-day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro climb — best acclimatisation and highest success rates
Best Option

8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

  • 8 days / 7 nights on mountain
  • Max altitude: 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak)
  • Moshi, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
  • Difficulty: Challenging
Overview:

The 8-day Lemosho Route is the package we recommend most for climbers who want the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. The extra day compared to the 7-day option is spent at Karanga Camp (4,035 m), providing an additional acclimatisation night at high altitude before the Barafu high camp and summit push. Combined with the longer, lower western approach through undisturbed forest and the Lava Tower acclimatisation point, this creates the best altitude-gain profile available without committing to the 9-day Northern Circuit. If you can allocate 8 days, this is the route we suggest.

Day-by-Day Itinerary — 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

01

Day 1: Lemosho Trailhead to Big Tree Camp

    Altitude: 2,100 m → 2,780 m Distance: 7 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Drive from Moshi to the western Lemosho trailhead (approximately 3 hours). A gentle first day through undisturbed montane rainforest with few other climbers. Colobus monkeys, forest elephants (occasional), and abundant birdlife. Big Tree Camp (2,780 m) for dinner and overnight.

02

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

    Altitude: 2,780 m → 3,505 m Distance: 9 km Hiking time: 4–6 hours

Continue through the forest and heather zone, emerging onto the Shira Plateau at Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m). The western approach is more gradual than the southern routes — the altitude gain is real but the terrain feels less demanding at this stage.

03

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

    Altitude: 3,505 m → 3,840 m Distance: 7 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Cross the open Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m). A shorter day focused on plateau acclimatisation. The plateau landscape is wide, dramatic, and unlike anything on the southern routes. Optional afternoon walk to a viewpoint above camp.

04

Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

    Altitude: 3,840 m → 4,600 m → 3,976 m Distance: 14 km Hiking time: 7–9 hours

The critical acclimatisation day. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,976 m). The climb-high-sleep-low effect is working at maximum efficiency on this day. Giant groundsel forest on the descent. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

05

Day 5: Barranco Camp over Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

    Altitude: 3,976 m → 4,035 m Distance: 5 km Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Cross the Barranco Wall (hands-on scramble, no ropes needed, 1–2 hours for most groups) and traverse to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Arrive early for a long rest afternoon.

06

Day 6: Extra Acclimatisation Night at Karanga Camp

Altitude: 4,035 m (extra night) Distance: Optional short walk Hiking time: Optional

This is the defining difference between the 7 and 8-day Lemosho. A full extra day at Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Your guide will lead a short acclimatisation walk to around 4,300 m in the morning before returning to camp to rest. The additional 24 hours at this altitude noticeably improves oxygen-carrying capacity before Barafu and the summit. Hydrate consistently, eat well, and rest in the afternoon.

07

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

    Altitude: 4,035 m → 4,673 m Distance: 4 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Steady ascent to Barafu Camp (4,673 m). Arrive early afternoon having already acclimatised well. Full meal, maximum hydration, complete rest before the summit. Summit briefing in the early evening. Wakeup call at 11 pm.

08

Day 8: Barafu Camp — Uhuru Peak — Mweka Gate

    Altitude: 4,673 m → 5,895 m → 1,650 m Distance: 22 km Hiking time: 14–17 hours total

Midnight departure. Ascend to Stella Point (5,752 m) on the crater rim, then to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After summit photographs, descend to Barafu for rest and hot food. Continue down through Mweka Camp and all the way to Mweka Gate (1,650 m) for the drive back to Moshi. Certificates issued at the gate. Dinner and overnight in Moshi.
